Janine Angela Scott, a 1997 graduate of Syracuse University College of Law and a 1993 graduate of the University of Maryland—College Park with a B.S. in Accounting, has dedicated her entire legal career to public interest law. Before joining Maryland Legal Aid, she served as a judicial law clerk for the Honorable David W. Young (ret.) of the Baltimore City Circuit Court. Janine has litigated a wide range of civil cases, including contested family law matters, Child in Need of Assistance (CINA) actions, representation of mentally ill patients in forced medication hearings, administrative law, and consumer cases. Currently the Chief Attorney of Maryland Legal Aid’s Baltimore County Office in Towson, she is also the author of Legal Aid Wealth: Surviving and Thriving on the Salary of a Public Interest Attorney, a book featured in several newspapers, including the Maryland Daily Record. Janine has presented on financial wellness and living debt-free to various audiences and has served in leadership roles such as Treasurer and Secretary for the Alliance of Black Women Attorneys and Chair of the Baltimore City Bar Association’s Government and Public Interest Lawyers Committee. She now chairs the Baltimore County Bar Association’s Government and Public Interest Lawyers Committee. Admitted to practice law in Maryland, New York, and Washington, D.C., Janine enjoys traveling, watching documentaries, and reading in her free time.
